TWENTY-TWO

CRICKET

“That was excruciating.” Hollis grimaces and rubs his hands over his eyes. I have to bite my lip to keep myself from giggling. He's so freaking dramatic and way too adorable.

“It wasn't that bad,” I say. He turns and gives me a doubtful look, so I quickly add, “I'm serious! Your parents are really sweet, and dinner was delicious. I swear I didn't feel weird at all.”

That's not entirely true, but Hollis was already so anxious about us having dinner with his parents tonight. He suggested canceling at least half a dozen times, and he's apologized over and over to me for what his mom said about Cas. It breaks my heart to know how bad Hollis feels. The last thing I ever want is to make him feel like he has to choose between me and his family.

Dinner was definitely a little awkward. It was obvious that Violetta was nervous. She spent the entire evening talking my ear off and trying so hard to make sure I was happy and comfortable. We didn't talk about what she said. In fact, everyone was very careful to avoid mentioning anything related to my birthday, my mate marks, or the upcoming mating ritual between me, Hollis, Cas, and Theo. I'm not ashamed, obviously, and I know Hollis isn't either. But I think his parents, and especially his mom, need a little more time to come to terms with our relationship.

“We've been really lucky so far,” I say quietly. I slide across the bench seat of Hollis's truck until I'm snuggled beside him, and I rest my head on his shoulder. “Almost everyone we're close with has been super supportive and accepting of our relationship. But generally, most people aren't okay with polyamory. It's not what your family expected when they imagined your future mate, but they’re trying their best to understand.”

Hollis pulls me closer and peers down at me with a slight frown. He still seems unsure. Unfortunately, I'm not sure there's anything else I can say that will make him feel better. It's easy for me to say he shouldn't be upset that his mom's not more supportive. My parents didn't bat an eye when they realized I was with Hollis, Cas, and Theo.

All I can do is love him and do my best to keep up a good relationship with his family. I'll happily come over for dinner every night that I get to spend with Hollis. Hopefully someday they won't have a problem with our relationship.

“Thank you.” He kisses me gently, smiling against my lips when I respond eagerly to his touch. When he pulls away, he chuckles and gives me one of his usual smiles. “Ready to head over to Aurora's?”

Now it's my turn to grimace. I've honestly been dreading having a real conversation with Aurora since I came back from New York after my birthday. She's hidden so much from me for so long. She's had visions of my future for my entire life, and she's known I'd get involved with Theo, Hollis, and Cas for years.
